photo credit: Robynlou8 As promised on Friday, below are a couple of articles that might improve the quality of your life. I've heard of phytonutrients (or phytochemicals) before, but this Care2 article about their many health benefits was pretty eye-opening. I had no idea that citrus fruit peels were even edible, and I certainly didn't know that they could benefit my lungs and liver! I printed out the chart from this article and hung it...

Anyone in need of a new bottle of perfume should definitely check out this Care2 article about toxin-free fragrances. Click the link at the bottom of the article to receive a 5 vial sample set of A Perfume Organic's fragrances. You'll also receive a voucher for a full-size bottle of your choice, to use once you decide on your favorite scent! All of this costs only $40, which is kind of a steal since a full-size bottle alone is ordinarily $65, and a sample set is usually $22. I've actually tried a sample of their

Link to Lavera Volume Mascara in Black Review

Yesterday I reviewed my current party time mascara, and today I'll be reviewing my current everyday mascara, which is Lavera Volume Mascara in Black. Ingredients (provided at lavera.com)- "Water, Grain Alcohol*, Sorbitol, Castor Oil*, Grain Alcohol, Jojoba Oil*, Tricaprylin, Sodium Cetearyl Sulfate, Hectorite, Lysolecithin, Rosa Damascena Flower Water*, Xanthan Gum, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Iron Oxides, Ultramarines (Cl 77007) * indicates ingredients from Certified Organic agriculture" I couldn't find this product in the Cosmetic Safety Database, so I searched the ingredients individually. I've linked to the only ingredient that has a hazard score higher than...

Snacking Smart on Valentine’s Day

Link to Snacking Smart on Valentine’s Day

With Valentine's Day coming up, I'm sure we'll all be eating our share of sweet treats.  I love a Reese's Heart just as much as the next girl, but I also realize that milk chocolate might not be the healthiest or the smartest choice to make. If you're like me and are disgusted by the ingredients listed on the bag of those cute little candy hearts (modified food starch?!!), then you should check out this Care2 article about Healthier Valentine's Candy & Chocolate. It has links...

Paper Crafts & Sore Throat Remedies

Using two pieces of Danielle's beautiful Amy Butler scrapbook paper (and following her crafty advice), I recently covered the lids of the glass jars on my bathroom counter. They look just as dreamy as I'd hoped. How is this health and beauty-related, you ask? Well, the jars do contain my hair pins, cotton swabs, and face pads/scrubbies...so there's that.

The harmless-looking, awful-tasting mixture above is comprised of  3/4 of a cup of warm water,...

Homemade Cranberry Lip Gloss

I decided to make the Homemade Cranberry Lip Gloss that I mentioned in my recent post, Homemade Holiday Skin Treats. I used olive oil instead of almond oil since we didn't have any of the latter, and I used coconut oil instead of petroleum jelly because that stuff grosses me out for so many reasons (one being this article that I found on the same site as the lip gloss recipe).

Warning: the final step is very, very messy if you don't have a sieve. I didn't photograph it because my hands were disgusting,...

I  bought a bottle of this lotion at Target a little over a month ago and have been using it once or twice a week since; I figured it was time to review it for you guys. I received the most delicious, free, organic, dark chocolate bar in the mail today. I already sort of  liked it before I tried it. I'm always up for dark chocolate since it's loaded with antioxidants, and we all know that antioxidants neutralize free radicals. This chocolate bar has fancy ingredients like organic meals from raspberries and cranberries and organic oils from pumpkin seeds, cranberries, and raspberries. It's also made with organic blueberries and organic lemon essential oil. You can definitely taste the lemon, but it's just very subtle and very tasty. I let Kirby and Danielle try it,...

I drink a lot of juice, and I've made it a personal goal of mine to only drink juices that add something other than sugar and water to my diet. Because of this, I've obviously been doing some research.  I've learned some pretty interesting facts about all sorts of juices, but apple juice is what I'd like to discuss right now. Other than buying organic, I've never been too picky when buying apple juice.  Apparently, whether or not the apple juice I'm buying is organic is is only one...

Another Use for Coconut Oil

Until a few days ago, I was taking off my eye makeup (which is usually the only makeup I wear) with olive oil.  While on our family beach vacation, Danielle suggested that I use coconut oil.  She had done the same and had an entirely positive experience.  She is always steering me in the right direction.  My eye makeup literally melted away. I will never go back to olive oil (unless I run out of coconut oil and am in a...
