Jonathan Straightening Lotion ReviewJanuary 14, 2011
Have you ever had that one product that you had to make an exception for? Jonathan Straightening Lotion is mine. It doesn’t have stellar ingredients, but my hair is so fabulous after I use it. I’m keeping it in my cabinet until someone gives me a damn good reason to take it out.
Ingredients (provided at jonathanproduct.com)- “Water (Aqua), Glycerin, Polyquaternium 11, polyquaternium-12, Amodimethicone, Cetrimonium Chloride, Trideceth-12,Hydroxypropyltrimonium Hydrolyzed Maize (Corn)Starch,Cetyl-Alcohol,Cetearyl-Alcohol,Stearyl-Alcohol,Beheny-Alcohol,Glyceryl-Stearate,PamiticAcid,StearicAcid,Hydroxyethyl Cetearamidopropyldimonium Chloride, Xanthan Gum, Methylisothiazolinone,PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Trideceth-9, Propylene Glycol, Polysorbate-20, Polyquaternium-10, Ilex Paraguariensis Leaf Extract, Orbignya Oleifera Seed Oil (Orbignya Oleifera), Anacardium Occidentale (Cashew) Seed Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Extract, PEG-25 PABA, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary)Leaf Water (Rosmarinus Officinalis), Salvia Officinalis (Sage) Leaf Water (Salvia Officinalis), Methylisothiazolinone, Tapioca Starch, Fragrance (Parfum).”
I couldnât find this specific product on theCosmetic Safety Database, but I’ll be the first to admit that the ingredient list is a little long and riddled with suspicious words for my liking. Some of my least favorites are fragrance, methylisothiazolinone, PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil, propylene glycol, andPEG-25 PABA, which are the ingredients with hazard scores above a 3. I feel like more of the ingredients would probably have higher scores too if more was known about them.
Some great things about this product:
1. It’s vegan.
2. It’s paraben, phthalate. gluten, and cruelty-free.

Performance– I’ve been using this product every time I straighten my hair lately, and it makes it so shiny! I straighten my hair in layers, so I’ll put the tiniest amount in my palm and spread it throughout the bottom layer first, straighten that layer, and so on. The bottle says that the straightening lotion provides thermal protection, so sometimes I apply a little to the ends of my hair before blow drying it too. Heat stying is something that I used to be ardently against, but my hair looks a million times better now that I actually put some time and effort into it. I may collect split ends a little faster, but at least I don’t look like a ragamuffin….right? I’ve also being squirting a little (little being the operative word) of this lotion on the tips of my fingers and running them through my bangs for texture. I only have one complaint to address concerning this lotion: it makes my hands sticky. Still, I will gladly wash my hands for a product that makes my hair look this fly.
Scent– It smells clean and pretty like a fancy body lotion. I feel like I’ve just been to the salon after I use it. I’ve been known to sniff my hair in public because if this.
Rating– Some of the ingredients in this straightening lotion are pretty lousy, but nothing else about this product is. 7/10
Would I purchase this product again?– I actually knew that I loved this straightening lotion before I bought a full-sized bottle, since a small sample packet came with my wonderful straightener. Yes, I will absolutely purchase it again.
