Does anyone else compulsively put on chap stick/ lip balm, whether or not their lips are actually chapped? I guess there are worse habits to have. Here’s a review for some lip balm that I’ve been using and loving for a few months now:

Ingredients (provided at burtsbees.com)- “helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, beeswax, cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, ricinus communis (castor) seed oil, lanolin, flavor, punica granatum (pomegranate) seed oil, tocopherol, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf extract, glycine soja (soybean) oil, canola oil, carmine.”

This lip balm earns a hazard score of three on the Cosmetic Safety Database. Flavor and Lanolin are the two highest ranking ingredients, with scores of four. The remaining ingredients have scores of two or below.

Product Description (also provided at burtsbees.com)- “This replenishing and hydrating natural lip balm is infused with the antioxidant goodness of Pomegranate oil. It replenishes moisture and restores texture to reveal smooth, healthy lips, and coats them for a smooth, even-toned appearance.”

Price- $3.00 for a o.15 oz tube

Performance-This has definitely become my go to lip balm. It makes my lips soft without making them feel too greasy, and it gives them a very subtle but still pretty pink tint. I may change wallets or pens,  but this stuff never leaves my purse. My only complaint is that it doesn’t have great staying power. I have to reapply every hour or so, if I want to maintain the tint.

Scent- I think that it smells a lot like fruit stripe gum, but I’ve never heard anyone say the same thing. Regardless, I find it to be very pleasant. Sometimes I apply it if I feel like I need to brush my teeth but am not near a tooth brush. It probably doesn’t help.

Rating-  I’m gonna go with a big bad 8. The lip balm is almost perfect, but I subtracted 2 points since I feel the need to reapply it so often.

I don’t want to be a buzz kill, but there are two ingredients that Burt’s Bees uses frequently that I can’t support. The first is lanolin from sheep’s wool. The second is carmine derived by boiling dried insects in water to extract the carminic acid and then treating the clear solution with alum, cream of tartar, stannous chloride, or potassium hydrogen oxalate; the coloring and animal matters present in the liquid are thus precipitated. Other methods are in use in which egg white, fish glue, or gelatine are sometimes added before the precipitation. Carmine is used in many cosmetics and also in food such as candy.

Don’t worry Jadey. Buzz kill or not you make a good point for all the vegans out there. Along with beeswax, lanolin and carmine are derived from animal products and they are in everything! It’s hard out here for a …….vegan. (just like a pimp)

I haven’t smelled or tasted Fruit Stripe gum in forever. I bet it still taste delicious.

Believe it or not, Jade, I actually knew that. I usually do my fair share of research about products before buying them. I still eat fish occasionally, and I’ve yet to cut gelatin out of my diet completely; I’m simply not as impassioned by these things as you are. Ingredients like fragrance, sodium borate, and any type of paraben concern me much more than the two ingredients you mentioned. Did you know that the sheep are not harmed for the lanolin to be harvested?

On a semi-related note, do you eat honey?

Burt’s Bees has two new lip balms. One with Acai and the other is like Mango Butter. They are fly! You should holla at them!

Mmmm, the mango butter one sounds like it might be calling my name.
