Today I’ll be reviewing my current favorite shampoo/conditioner duo, which just so happens to be Desert Essence’s Coconut & . Let’s do this thing.
Ingredients (provided at desertessence.com)-
Shampoo: “Water (Aqua), Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract*, Arctium Lappa (Burdock) Root Extract*, Achillea Millefolium (Yarrow) Extract*, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Leaf Extract*, Foeniculum Vulgare (Fennel) Seed Extract*, Sambucus Nigra (Black Elderberry) Flower Extract*, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract*, Sodium Coco-Sulfate (Coconut Derived), Decyl Glucoside (Coconut and Corn Derived), Propanediol (Corn Derived), Coco-Glucoside (Coconut Derived), Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter*, Coco Nucifera (Coconut) Oil*, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Cannabis Sativa (Hemp) Seed Oil*, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil*, Dehydroacetic Acid, Glycerin, Hydrogenated Coco-Glycerides (Coconut Derived), Sodium Chloride, Potassium Sorbate (Fruit Derived), Lauryl Glucoside (Plant Derived), Benzyl Alcohol, Citric Acid, Stearyl Citrate (Vegetable Derived), Fragrance (Parfum)
* Certified Organic”
Conditioner: “Water (Aqua), Olea Europaea (Olive) Leaf Extract*, Urtica Dioica (Nettle) Leaf Extract*, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract*, Cetearyl Alcohol (Coconut Derived), Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Coco Nucifera (Coconut) Oil*, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter*, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil*, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil*, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (Coconut Derived), Dehydroacetic Acid, Cetrimonium Chloride, Benzyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Potassium Sorbate (Fruit Derived), Citric Acid, Fragrance (Parfum)
* Certified Organic”
The Cosmetics Database gives the shampoo a hazard score of 4 and the conditioner (for which I created a preliminary report) a hazard score of 3. I’m not particularly worried about either of these scores, however, since the ingredient with the highest hazard score in each product is fragrance—while the bottle plainly states that the products are phthalate-free. Choose your choices, am I right?
Some great things about these products:
1. They’re free of parabens, sodium lauryl/laureth sulfates, phthalates, artificial colors, silicones, EDTA, glycol and petroleum-based ingredients.
2. They contain organic ingredients.
3. They’re 100% vegan and wheat/gluten free.
Product Descriptions(provided at desertessence.com)-
Shampoo: “Coconut Oil Cleansers gently cleanse dry or damaged hair. Organic Jojoba oil moisturizes hair and scalp so hair looks and feels healthier. Organic Olive Oil leaves hair soft and silky without weighing it down.”
Conditioner: “Organic Coconut Oil softens hair and conditions the scalp, while emollient Organic Shea Butter helps dry hair retain moisture. Organic Sunflower Oil leaves hair feeling and looking soft and silky without weighing it down.”
Price– for 8 oz bottle. Super reasonable, yeah?
Performance– Now, I’ve mentioned time and time again that my hair responds well to pretty much anything…but this shampoo and conditioner might be a little extra special. The conditioner makes my hair super shiny and doesn’t weigh it down even a little, and the shampoo has a nice lather that I find especially comforting.
Oh, and here’s a picture or two of my hair after washing/conditioning with these products (though they’re actually meant to showcase my new headband and not my old hair):
Scent– A rich, warm coconut that makes me feel like I’m on a beach somewhere. I’m for it.
Rating– 8/10 since the ingredients aren’t absolutely ideal.
Would I purchase this item again? Yes ma’am.
*Product was purchased by me (/my mother). I was not compensated in any way for this review.
