Inspired by my love of Maple & Brown Sugar Oatmeal but wanting something with better ingredients, I used the above items on Wednesday morning to make one of the best bowls of oatmeal I've ever had. To make this tasty oatmeal, I simply prepared 1 serving of 100% whole grain old fashioned oats and stirred in a tablespoon of maple syrup. Then, I sprinkled a small handful of Flax Plus Maple Pecan Crunch on top and followed it up with a little cinnamon.

Foody Friday:Raw Vegetables

I recently read a Care2 article that listed Five Ways to Add Years to Your Life, and it inspired me to eat at least a cup of raw vegetables a day. I've always known cooked vegetables aren't quite as healthy as raw, but 30% fewer antioxidants is a big deal! Wednesday morning I had the bowl of carrots, broccoli, and celery pictured above with a bit of Liquid Aminos on top. Thursday I had a baby spinach salad with carrots, broccoli, avocados and tomatoes...

Snacking Smart:Homemade Snow Cones

After taking Clementine for a walk in the park yesterday, I wanted nothing more than a large and delicious snow cone. I briefly considered picking one up on the way home, but a Styrofoam cup filled with high fructose corn syrup didn't sound entirely appetizing. I decided to make my own using ingredients we had around our kitchen, and it was probably the best snacky decision I've made since my recent smoothie-related one. I stuck to a...

Snacking Smart on Valentine’s Day

Link to Snacking Smart on Valentine’s Day

With Valentine's Day coming up, I'm sure we'll all be eating our share of sweet treats.  I love a Reese's Heart just as much as the next girl, but I also realize that milk chocolate might not be the healthiest or the smartest choice to make. If you're like me and are disgusted by the ingredients listed on the bag of those cute little candy hearts (modified food starch?!!), then you should check out this Care2 article about Healthier Valentine's Candy & Chocolate. It has links...

A Healthy New Year’s Resolution

I frequently give myself lifestyle improvement goals and never meet them.  It's something that I'm not proud of, but it has become a fact of my life. I'm putting my foot down this year, and I'm making a new year's resolution to exercise at least every other day and stick to it. I asked Kirby for Asics for Christmas because, well, I think that running and riding my bike might seem more appealing if I have some cool shoes to do it in. Also, the pair of Walmart sneakers that I've had since high school are a sad...

Kirby and I watched a documentary called Food Matters a few nights ago, and we had very different opinions of it. He thought that most of the experts and teachers on the documentary were either uninformed or bat shit crazy, while I enjoyed the documentary as a whole and most of the people in it (especially Charlotte Gerson and Phillip Day). Regardless of our mixed feelings concerning the documentary, we were both moved to try liquid vitamins and eat more raw fruits and vegetables after watching it. We headed to the health food store the next day and purchased

A Healthy Birthday Gift Basket

Today is my beautiful sister Danielle's birthday, and while I could never top the caring and thoughtful gifts that she gave me for my recent birthday (some lovely handmade pillowcases that she'll be posting about soon)... I still tried to buy her things that she will use and enjoy. One of the health food stores in Lake Charles is going out of business (sadly, it's probably the better of the two that we have), and everything in their store is 45% off! I even got the basket (the one that all the gifts are piled in) from there for...

I stumbled upon this site today, and I cannot wait to take advantage of some of these deals. Vitacost.com has surprisingly low prices on all kinds of natural health and beauty products. The even have food and herbal teas! The products offered actually remind me  a lot of the healthy food section in my favorite Kroger. Whoa...

Luna Bars have been around for a while. I get that. However, I just discovered them about two weeks ago....and I am smitten. Each flavor is better than the last, and they're a much healthier choice than my former sweet treats of choice ( cookies, snickers, cream cheese piled on top of a cinnamon raisin bagel).  And if I needed another reason to like them, which I don't, they're full of things that women need to stay healthy that they may not get elsewhere  (like Calcium and Folic Acid). My favorites are berry almond and blueberry...
