I know that I've discussed my potentially greasy face with you guys before. I have to be careful when choosing a moisturizer, and I  usually try (and fail) to steer clear of oil-based moisturizers (with the exception of eye creams).  When I read the description for this product, I knew that I had to at least give it a try. Ingredients- (provided at karensbotanicals.com)- "Aloe Vera gel*, pure vegetable Glycerine, Melissa extract*;  Bergamot, Tea Tree, and other selected essential oils. *Denotes certified organic. Use within one year of purchase." Product Description (also provided at karensbotanicals.com)- "A...

I've always been the pretentious jerk at cookouts who passes up the communal bug spray.  I'm just too weirded out by all the chemicals. I can't make myself okay with it, not even once in a blue moon.  Now that I have a natural alternative that works, I can bring my own and avoid seeming like a turd. Ingredients- (provided at burtsbees.com) - glycine soja (soybean) oil, ricinus communis (castor) seed oil, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf oil, cymbopogon schoenanthus (lemongrass) oil, thuja occidentalis (cedar) leaf oil, mentha piperita (peppermint) oil, cymbopogon nardus (citronella) oil, eugenia...

Today was a day for buying things.

Link to Today was a day for buying things.

I ran some errands with my sister today and ended up making a few purchases. Burt's Bees Herbal Insect Repellent- I've been meaning to try this for a while now.  I always forget about until I'm at a cookout and the only stuff available is Off!  I usually just suck it up and let the bugs bite me. Living Foods Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil- This is a definite upgrade from the jar that I just finished (which had a picture of shrimp on the label, and was found tucked between the olive and vegetable oils in Walmart).

I drink tap water; I don’t need fluoride in my toothpase.

Link to I drink tap water; I don’t need fluoride in my toothpase.

After trying several different kinds of Tom's of Maine toothpastes, I've come to realize that they are all flawed in some way or another.  Most of them have Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (and not to mention fluoride: don't even get me started on fluoride), and the ones that are SLS and fluoride free still don't freshen my breath.  I'm a frequent flosser, a mouth-washer, and a tongue brusher...so I'm pretty sure that it's no fault of my own. After giving up on Tom's of Maine, I decided to try Burt's Bees Fluoride-Free Whitening Toothpaste. Since Burt's Bees steers clear of SLS, I...

I need them in my life.

I rarely make a long-term commitment to any health and beauty product, but those listed below have a special place in my heart and in my beauty regimen. 1. Desert Essence tea tree oil mouthwash- Let's get real, natural toothpastes don't actually do much for bad breath.  Flossing and brushing are great for making my teeth look clean, but mouthwash is where it's at if I want to talk close to someone's face (and I do).  I love the way this stuff tastes, and it makes my breath downright pleasant. 2. Spring Valley tea tree oil (that walmart jurnt)- Can you tell...

Burt’s Bees Natural Skin Care for Men-Aftershave

I am trying to ease Kirby into natural skin care products. As one of the first steps, I bought him a few paraben and SLS-free products for Christmas. He really likes this one. Even though the containter says it's an aftershave, he uses it as an all over face moisturizer. When I asked him his three favorite things about the product, he said this: "I like the smell, the texture, and that it is a good moisturizer." I also like the smell, and since I am close to his face on a fairly regular basis...I guess that's pretty important. It's rated as a...

A New Year’s Resolution of Sorts

I remember very clearly the day that I became curious about the ingredients in the health and beauty products I use.  It happened after reading an internet news article about a girl dying as a result of using too much perfume. As to whether or not this article was bullshit, I really have no clue.  I read some really disturbing things about parabens, preservatives used in many cosmetics and toiletries, and sodium lauryl or laureth sulfates, which are cleaning agents. I felt overwhelmed, so I decided that I would try to avoid those two ingredients at least. I began buying...

Burt’s Bees Cleansing Cream

I recently started washing my face once a day instead of two or three. You might think that this would cause the overall condition of my skin to worsen (I was convinced for years that the more you wash your face, the cleaner it will be, and the less  breakouts will occur...), but I have found the contrary to be true. Both the texture and tone of my skin have improved quite dramatically for such a simple change in my routine. By the way, that is the cleanser that I've been using for a while now and it is slammin. I...

Link to a truly hairy situation

Allow me to preface this entry by saying I firmly believe that all the things we put on our bodies have just as much of an impact on our health and well-being as the things we put in our bodies. For the past two years or so, I had been passionately searching for a shampoo and condioner that satisfied, met, and maybe even exceeded all my expectations.  I was actually not asking for much. I just needed something free of parabens(a type of preservative) and sodium lauryl/laureth sulfates(a cleaning agent) that would also make my hair look fabulous. I learned very...
