The preliminary reports that I created in the Cosmetics Database give these products each a hazard score of 1. The 1 ingredient I left out of each report is maqui berry, which the site didn’t recognize. There are no ingredients in these products with hazard scores higher than 2, but there are a few ingredients with no data.

Some great things about these products:

1. They contain organic ingredients.

2. They’re of parabens, petrochemicals, retinyl palmitate, phthalates, artificial fragrance, artificial colors & chemical preservatives.

3. They’re cruelty-free (and the only animal product 100% pure uses is cruelty-free honey).

Product Description(provided at 100percentpure.com)- “Highly nourishing, luxurious cream concentrated with potent anti-aging antioxidants, vitamins, skin softening fruit oils and moisturizing cocoa and avocado butters. Delicious smelling body cream will immediately hydrate, soften and feed your skin nutrients for a healthy, glowing complexion. Truly, 100% Pure – never any artificial fragrances, synthetic chemicals, toxic preservatives, or any other unsafe ingredients. Made only with the highest quality, organic nutrients for your skin.”

Price- Each 8 oz. bottle costs around $15.

Performance- If soft, hydrated skin if what you’re after (and who isn’t?), then these body creams are right up your alley. They won’t leave you feeling greasy or oily, and your skin will be smooth from morning until night!

Scent- The cabernet grape smells like grape kool-aid- what a treat! The green apple smells like a sour apple blow pop (another treat, but this scent is much more fleeting). The honey almond is definitely my favorite scent of the three. It reminds me a little of a maraschino cherry, which I love.

Rating- I’m giving the Grape and Apple lotions each an 8/1o, since the scents aren’t really something I’d consider wearing daily (regardless of how yummy they might smell).

The Honey Almond earns a 10/10. It seems to be a much more versatile scent, and it’s one I’d likely wear day after day.

Average rating: 9/10!

Would I purchase this item again? I would definitely buy the honey almond body cream again. I find few things preferable to smelling like a cherry.

Looking for some natural products for a dreamy man in your life? Well, look no further; I found several gems while putting together this list!

I don’t know many men who moisturize, and I think it’s a real shame.

I’m not gonna lie; the bright blue label is mostly to blame for this item’s presence on this list.

I bet this beard oil smells heavenly.

Kirby enjoys all things vanilla scented, and this vanilla almond shea butter would likely be no exception.

Getting clean never seemed so manly!

Moisture Cream, Shaving Gel, Beard Oil, Shea Butter, Body Wash.

Also, I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned this to you guys yet, but I’ll be attending my first day of classes at McNeese tomorrow! Taking a year off made me realize how important finishing college is to me, and I’m pretty excited about going back and continuing with a history major. I’ll also be working at the school, so free time won’t come as easily as it has in the past several months. I’ll try to continue posting at least five times a week, but don’t worry if I miss a day or two. I’m not going anywhere. : )

With oatmeal, aloe vera, shea butter and evening primrose, nothing relieves dry skin faster than this exquisitely natural formula. Contains organic ingredients. pH 5.0-5.5″

Price- Around $11.00 for 11 oz.

Performance-This lotion performs almost exactly like Earth Science’s Multi-Therapy Lotion, which I reviewed Tuesday. It can be easily massaged into skin, and it moisturizes without leaving a residue. It does seem to take slightly longer to dry, but that could very well be my imagination. For best results, apply to moist skin after showering and allow to dry before putting on clothes. Soft skin all day long…that’s what’s up.

Scent- This lotion smells like a less intense version of Earth Science Purfection Hand Cream. It’s slightly floral and slightly citrus, and it’s also fleeting. A couple of hours after application, I didn’t notice the scent at all. That could be a good or bad thing, I guess, depending on the person. I’ve been known to get a headache after smelling the same scent for hours, so I’m not complaining.

Rating- 7/10. I subtracted three points for the three most hazardous ingredients.

Would I purchase this item again? I’ll probably go for something with fewer questionable ingredients. I’ve got my eye on a big bottle of their Multi-Therapy Unscented lotion!

*Samples were provided by Earth Science. Opinions were provided by me.

I couldn’t locate this product in the Cosmetics Database, so I linked to each ingredient individually above. Those with hazard scores above a 2 are Dimethicone (3), Lecithin (3-5), and Phenoxyethanol (3-4).

Some great things about this product:

1. It’s free of parabens, sulfates, animal ingredients & synthetic fragrances.

2. It’s cruelty-free.

Product Description (provided at earthsciencenaturals.com)- ”Enjoy the unique combination of three therapeutic benefits all in one exquisitely-nourishing lotion. That’s what we call multi-therapy. pH 6.0

Dry skin therapy
- Rich in natural emollients and skin softening oils, it soothes and nourishes even the driest skin, providing dry skin relief throughout the day. Apply daily to dry skin for soothing and long-lasting moisture.
Massage therapy
- Exceptional glide without stickiness makes this the ideal lotion for massage. Washes easily out of fabrics.
Therapeutic Lotion Base
- Truly unscented, it is perfect for base for blending with essential oils or other therapeutic ingredients.”

Price- Around $10.00 for 11 oz. or $2.00 for 2 oz. You can also buy a gallon for $44.00.

Performance- This lotion moisturizes without leaving any greasy residue, and it’s surprisingly easy to massage into skin. I’ve noticed that applying this product liberally and while my skin is still moist from showering results in softer skin for a longer period of time. Apparently this is true for most and maybe even all moisturizers (or so I’ve read), but I constantly have to remind myself to moisturize before completely towel-drying my skin. This product didn’t seem to irritate the sensitive skin on my chest and neck, which was also a pleasant surprise. As with any moisturizer, I’d suggest waiting at least five minutes after application before getting dressed.

Scent- Aside from the very faint scent that most or all unscented lotions have, this lotion doesn’t really smell like anything. While I do enjoy fragrance free lotions when I’m wearing perfume and don’t want a weird collision of smells, there are other times when lotion is the only source of scent on my body. I’d be interested in blending this lotion with essential oils (as per the product description’s suggestion).

Rating- 8/10. I subtracted 2 points for the questionable ingredients, particularly the two with the highest hazard scores.

Would I purchase this item again? Yes, I probably would. As far as unscented moisturizers go, this product and Karen’s Botanicals Perfect Lotion are two of the best I’ve tried. Since this one is slightly less expensive, I might use it as an all over moisturizer and continue using the Perfect Lotion as a night cream for my face.

I could not find this product in the Cosmetic Safety Database, so I linked to the ingredients individually. The only ingredients with hazard scores above a 2 are Fragrance (8) and Benzyl Alcohol (6), but several of the ingredients with zeros as hazard scores have large data gaps.

Some great things about this product:

1. It’s formulated without Parabens, Sulfates, and Petroleum.

2. It’s contains organic ingredients.

Product Description (provided at yestocarrots.com)- “Well, the truth is, we already know you are beautiful. And we want to keep you feeling that way! Yes To Tomatoes Body Butter perfectly balances the pH levels in your skin while providing you with deep, long-lasting hydratation. Why not indulge yourself, a little skin therapy is good for the soul! Go on, get balanced, renew your skin and yourself!”

Price- $12.99 for 8.45 fl. oz. on their website, but Kirby bought me two tubs of it from Walgreens for around $3.00 a piece (possibly because it was about to expire).

Performance-Maybe, at 21 years of age, I’m just learning that I prefer lotions over body butters, but I find this product to be a little greasy and slow to absorb/dry after I apply it. There’s no debating whether or not it makes my skin soft, because it definitely does…but I feel a little sticky for anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours after applying it. Also, it’s too rich for the sensitive skin on my neck and chest, which is not uncommon but still inconvenient.

Scent- This body butter smells pretty powdery to me, but not overwhelmingly so. It’s kind of a stereotypical lotion smell. That makes sense, right?

Rating-I’m subtracting two points for the less than awesome ingredients and another two for the greasiness/slow absorption. 6/10

Would I purchase this item again?-Probably not. While this product does leave my skin feeling soft, I can think of several other moisturizers whose performance and ingredients I prefer.

I bought a bottle of this lotion at Target a little over a month ago and have been using it once or twice a week since; I figured it was time to review it for you guys.

Ingredients (I gave up trying to find these ingredients online after ten minutes and just typed them out all by myself)- “Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil*, Deionized Water, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter)*, Stearyl Alcohol (Palm Kernal), Vegetable Emulsifying Wax, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter*, Vegetable Glycerin, Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil*, Essential Oil Blend, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (Aloe Vera), Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Hibiscus Sabdariffa Flower Extract, Papain (Papaya Extract), Allantoin (Comfrey Root Extract), Lonicera Caprifolium (Honeysuckle) Flower, Lonicera Japonica (Japanese Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Songyi Mushroom Extract, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Milk.”

I couldn’t locate this product on the Cosmetic Safety Database, but the ingredient with the highest hazard score is Vegetable Emulsifying Wax, with a four. The rest of the ingredients are either zeros, ones, or twos.

Some great things about this product:

1. It was not tested on animals.

2. It’s free of parabens, phthalates, paraffin, formaldehyde, propylene glycol, mineral oil, synthetic fragrance, synthetic color, animal ingredients, PABA, and DEA.

I didn’t know what PABA was, so I looked it up. Here’s what the Cosmetic Safety Database had to say: “A once-common sunscreen ingredient, now avoided due to allergic dermatitis and photosensitivity. Research indicates PABA has carcinogenic potential. PABA derivatives are now more commonly used, but these too may have health concerns.”

Recyclability- The bottle is #1 plastic, which means that I can recycle it in Lake Charles. Hooray!

Product Description (provided at sheamoisture.com)- “SheaMoisture’s Coconut & Hibiscus Collection is a bounty of nutrient-rich tropical ingredients high in vitamins, minerals and fatty acids working together to stimulate collagen production, improve skin firmness and naturally smooth wrinkles. The anti- inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties of the Hibiscus flower help to maintain the skin’s elasticity, improve skin tone and offer anti-aging effects.”

Price-$7.99 for an 8 oz bottle and $9.99 for a 13 oz bottle

Performance- As far as moisturizing goes, this lotion is a real winner. It makes my skin soft like a baby’s without making me feel greasy. The scent has real staying power too, but I’ll discuss below why that may not be a good thing. I’ve only used this lotion on my neck and chest once or twice, and I felt like it may have been to heavy because of the tiny bumps that appeared on my chest the next day. Bummer!

Scent- I know that the name and ingredient list don’t mention pineapple at all, but this lotion smells a lot like pineapple to me. Maybe it’s the papaya. Does papaya smell like pineapple? Sadly, I often find the scent of pineapple to be overwhelming and a little nauseating. For this reason, and because it caused my chest to break out a little, I’ve been inclined to limit the application of this lotion to the lower half of my body.

Rating- Because this lotion was so reasonably-priced, I really wanted to like it. Unfortunately, I cannot get on board with the heavy tropical scent. Rating: 5/10

Would I purchase this item again?: I enjoyed how soft this lotion made my legs, feet and stomach so much that I’d definitely be willing to try another scent, perhaps the Lemongrass & Tea Tree. The fact that this lotion caused my chest to break out isn’t as much of a deal-breaker for me. I don’t mind limiting a product to certain areas of my body if it works really well for those areas.

I’ve proclaimed my love for moisturizing and moisturizers time and time again, so I was obviously excited when I received my very own free bottle of Acure Organics Energizing Body Lotion in the mail. I’m just as excited to review it.

Ingredients (provided at acureorganics.com)- “Organic Curoxidant Blend (Organic Acai Berry, Organic Blackberry, Organic Rosehips, Organic Elderberry, Organic Nettle Leaf, Organic Cranberry, Organic Goji Berry, Organic Raspberry, Organic Pomegranate, Organic Blueberry), Organic Calendula officinalis, Organic Chamomile, Fair Trade Certified Organic Yerba Mate, Mango Ceylon, RooibosTea, Organic AloeVera Leaf Juice, Vegetable Emulsifying Wax NF, Fair Trade Certified Organic Cocoa Seed Butter, Organic Safflower Seed Oil, Organic Coconut Oil, Glyceryl Stearate SE (Vegetable Derived), Vegetable Glycerin, Organic Sunflower Oil, Cetearyl Glucoside, Infusion of Organic Calendula Officinalis Flower in Fair Trade Certified Organic Olive Oil, Valencia Orange Essential Oil, Glucono Delta Lactone (fermented sugar), Red Mandarin Oil, 100% natural non GMO Vitamin E, Organic Evening Primrose Oil, Potassium Sorbate (food grade preservative), Clove Bud Oil”

I couldn’t locate this product on the Cosmetic Safety Database, but the two ingredients that made me curious, Cetearyl Glucoside and Glyceryl Stearate, have hazard scores of zero and one, respectively. I’m not crazy about Potassium Sorbate, which has a low hazard score of one but is also linked to cancer, but preservatives are necessary sometimes, I guess. :-/

Some great things about this product:

1. It’s vegan.

2. It’s cruely, paraben, sulfate, and gluten-free.

3. It’s formulated without synthetic fragrances.

Recyclability- This plastic bottle is a 1, which means that I can recycle it in Lake Charles. Yay! We can only recycle ones and twos. I think that’s pretty ridiculous.

Product Description (also provided at acureorganics.com)- “Rough day? Late night got you feeling like a zombie? Break out of that funk with this uplifting lotion that restores brightness and rejuvenatues your spirits. Non-greasy formula so that much needed coffee won’t go flying out of your hand! Vitamin C you later stress!”

Price-$9.99 for 7 ounces. That’s kind of a steal.

Performance- I’ve mentioned before that the sensitive skin on my chest is prone to breakouts, right? I’m pretty sure that I have. This lotion is gentle enough for my chest, but it’s also rich enough for my ashy legs. That’s saying something. It’s a rare occurrence that I find a lotion that I can use on my entire body with no problems. What’s gentle enough for my chest and neck usually isn’t moisturizing enough for my legs, arms, tummy, hands, and feet. And what works for those areas is usually too heavy for my neck and chest.

Scent- Remember the Grapefruit Pom Body Lotion that I recently reviewed? To me, this Mandarin Orange + Mango lotion smells a tiny bit like that, but it’s sweeter and with a longer lasting scent. I wouldn’t say that this stuff actually smells like mandarin oranges or mangoes; it’s mostly just sweet and citrus-y. It manages to smell warm and spicy on some level too, if that makes any sense at all. I’m into it.

Rating- Lovely scent+Reasonable price+Good ingredients+Even better performance= a well-earned rating of 10. My only complaint is that this lotion isn’t sold in a bigger bottle, because I’d totally buy it. I’m gonna have to try the other scents; I just know it!

I moisturize at least once a day, so lotion is a pretty important part of my beauty regimen. I’ve been using and loving Skin’s Apricot Mango Eye Cream for while now, and I was understandably excited to give Skin’s Grapefruit Pom Body Lotion a try.

Ingredients (provided at carenonline.com)- “Sweet almond oil*, jojoba oil*, virgin coconut oil*, pomegranate seed oil*, cocoa butter*, glycerin, grapefruit essential oil*, vegetable emulsifying wax, distilled water, vitamin E oil, grapefruit seed extract.

*Certified organic”

The product received a hazard score of one on the Cosmetic Safety Database. Vitamin E oil and Glycerin are the only two ingredients with a hazard score of two. The rest are a one or a zero. This products is not linked to cancer, reproductive/developmental toxicity, or allergies/immunotoxicity.

Product Description (also provided at carenonline.com)- “Ahhh! The invigorating smell of grapefruit and the extra special healing properties of pomegranate combine in this wonderfully moisturizing lotion. Sweet almond oil, loaded with vitamins to protect, nourish, soothe and soften, coconut oil to form a protective layer which helps to retain moisture, cocoa butter which has been used for many years to lessen the appearance of stretch marks and scars and vitamin E oil, all enhance this yummy lotion. A true Caren favorite!”

Price-It’s $16.95 for an 8 ounce bottle, but you can also get a try me! size (that’s approximately one ounce) for $3.95 from carenonline.com (which is what I did).

Performance- I quickly discovered that this product was perfect for moisturizing my neck and chest, which are two of the most sensitive areas other than my face that I apply lotion. Grapefruit Pom lotion effectively moisturized my neck and chest without making me feel greasy or causing a breakout, which is quite an achievement. I tried it on the rest of my body as well, but I typically prefer richer moisturizers for my arms, legs and tummy.

Scent- The scent of this lotion is mostly grapefruit and very little pom, but I’m not complaining or anything. I think it smells tasty! As a general rule, I’d much rather use a product that has a light, citrus scent than one that smells too sweet. Sometimes that can be nauseating.

Rating- Good ingredients, pleasant scent and exceptional performance? What a combo! This product definitely deserves a 9. I subtracted 1 point for the price because, let’s face it. It’s a little steep, and I’m a little broke.

Moving sucks, but I think that it might suck a little less for me than it does for most people. My possessions are pretty much limited to clothing, accessories, miscellaneous craft items, and a lot of beauty products. I realize what kind of person that must make me seem like, but I can’t muster the energy to care. Our bedroom furniture is Kirby’s. Our living room furniture is Kirby’s. Even our dishes belong to Kirby. I am using Kirby’s computer to type this post. We did buy our television together, so I guess that’s something…but moving a television is a lot easier than moving a couch. In the end, I guess it doesn’t matter much. I’ll obviously be helping Kirby move the heavier things that belong to him, but the entire point of this post has nothing to do with couches or televisions.

The Point:

I have an insane amount of beauty products, and that picture doesn’t even begin to cover it. I use everything in the above picture on a daily basis. I own dozens of other sprays and masks and creams that I use rarely, if at all. I think that I should cut back before it becomes a problem. Hell, it probably already has. Why do I have four different body moisturizers that are all half full? There is no reason for that to happen. Needless to say, I’m gonna work on it.

I remember very clearly the day that I became curious about the ingredients in the health and beauty products I use. It happened after reading an internet news article about a girl dying as a result of using too much perfume. As to whether or not this article was bullshit, I really have no clue. I read some really disturbing things about parabens, preservatives used in many cosmetics and toiletries, and sodium lauryl or laureth sulfates, which are cleaning agents. I felt overwhelmed, so I decided that I would try to avoid those two ingredients at least. I began buying burt’s bees, alba hawaiian, tom’s of maine, yes to carrots, and method products because they were paraben and SLS-free (aside from my toothpaste and my hand soap, because I could not find ANY without SLS). I never stopped to consider all the other chemicals that I was introducing my body to by using those products. My sister, disfordelicate, has always been ahead of the game. A few days ago, she told me about a website (cosmeticsdatabase.com) where I could find out exactly how hazardous the products I use are to my health. The website rates products on a scale from one to ten (one being the least dangerous and ten being the most dangerous). I was beyond shocked and a little disgusted by the things that I discovered. The result? As I finish the products that I currently use (to avoid being wasteful), I will be attempting to replace them with safer and more natural alternatives. The rundown:
