Before I launch into my review of The DivaWash, I should probably tell you guys what I thought of The DivaCup. Since Danielle already crossed that bridge, I won’t post an entire review of the little guy, but I do need to make it clear that I am completely converted. After experiencing an entire menstrual cycle with the cup, I can honestly say that I’ve never had a more pleasant period. I didn’t feel like I was plugging a leak (as I often did with tampons) or wearing a diaper (like I always do with pads), and I wasn’t at all worried about smelling like a period. Most conveniently of all, I didn’t feel compelled to take frequent trips to the bathroom for mirror checks. What I’m trying to say is that I love my DivaCup, and I love Danielle for getting me a gift that keeps on giving. Unless the circumstances absolutely require it (and I can’t see that happening), I will never again buy a box of overpriced, unbleached, organic cotton tampons.

Ingredients (provided with product packaging)- water, cocamidopropyl betain, decyl polyglucose, sodium cocoyl isethionate, vegetable glycerin, caprylic/capric tryglyceride, tocopherol acetate, ascorbic acid, retinyl palmitate, citrus officinalis, xanthan gum, citric acid, citrus sinensis.

Since I couldn’t locate this product in the Cosmetics Database, I created a preliminary report for my own use. It hasn’t been verified by EWG, so you guys can’t see it, but it gives this product an overall hazard score of 4. The ingredients with hazard scores above 3 are as follows: cocamidopropyl betain (5), tocopherol acetate (4), and retinyl palmitate (8). Additionally, there was no data on decyl polyglucose or vegetable glycerin, and I couldn’t find citrus officinalis in the database at all (so the database didn’t take that ingredient into account when I was adding the product).

Some great things about this product:

1.It’s paraben, sulfate, and petrochemical free.

2. There are no animal ingredients or testing.

3. The container is made from #1 plastic and can easily be recycled.

Product Description(provided at divacup.com)- ”We recommend that The DivaWash be used to clean The DivaCup. We have formulated The DivaWash as a botanically-based, all natural cleanser that has been specifically designed to protect the integrity of the silicone material.

It is important to use only a natural, non-fragrance soap with The DivaCup. Many soaps leave a residue. These can leave a film on the cup that may cause irritation.”

Price- around $8.00

Performance- It’s true… this cleanser is very concentrated, and I like only needing to use a tiny bit to clean my DivaCup. It rinses away quickly without leaving any residue, and I appreciate that. Since my body wash and facial cleanser have better ingredients than The DivaWash, though, I have and will not use this product to wash my face or body (as the bottle and website suggest).

Scent- It has an appropriately mild and refreshing citrus scent.

Rating- 7/10. I subtracted 1 point for each ingredient with a hazard score above a 3.

Would I purchase this item again? Once I run out of this bottle, I’ll probably just use Dr. Bronner’s to wash my DivaCup. As much as I might like this product’s performance and refreshing scent, I’m not thrilled about putting some of the ingredients in and around my lady parts. You know what I’m saying?

Even the occasional reader of my blog has probably seen mention of my lovely sister, Danielle. She’s basically my role model, and her countless healthy decisions have undoubtedly influenced the majority of mine. Today she’ll be reviewing the Diva Cup, a product that I’ve heard only positive things about and cannot wait to try. Take it away, Sister!

I’ve been experimenting with alternative menstrual products since around the time I left home for college. All the waste associated with conventional tampons and pads just never sat well with me, and the concept of bleached cotton so close to such a sensitive area really weirded me out. I used unbleached cotton tampons for a while with limited success; while they certainly put my mind a bit more at ease, I still experienced all the other problems associated with cotton tampons like worsened cramps, dryness on light days (almost every day for me), and of course guilt over all those wasted natural resources (cotton isn’t the easiest crop to grow). Not to mention the fact that tampons have just never felt right to me. I’ve always heard that if you’re wearing them right you shouldn’t be able to feel them at all, so I had to conclude that I either wasn’t wearing them right or was somehow made wrong. I’ve always had a leaking problem with tampons, too, which I take as evidence in favor of either one or both of the aforementioned theories. Additionally, organic, unbleached cotton tampons aren’t exactly within the average college freshman’s budget, so I was paying quite a bit for a product I was barely moderately satisfied with. After doing a bit of research online, I cut up some old t-shirts and felt pajamas to make my first batch of cotton pads.Yes, you can order fancy ones online, but I wasn’t sure if I’d like them and I was just learning to sew anyway and wanted to see if I could make something useful and save myself some money in the process. I didn’t bother using any sort of liner, and I didn’t make them particularly thick either, because my three-day periods are on the light side (though they haven’t always been; I have theories about why this is, but that’s a discussion for the comments section or another post I suppose). I did use dark colored fabric, however, for what I believe to be obvious reasons. Anyway, this might be the point where a lot of people’s gross-out-impulses would war with their good intentions, but I never had this problem; I am not squeamish at all when it comes to periods and never have been, so my period and me coexisted pretty blissfully for nearly four years. I just made sure to rinse the pads well with cold water in the bathroom sink, and I added a little vinegar and borax to the load of towels I washed them with. Leaking and smelling like a big old period were never big problems for me except on really long days (like working open to close), but I just brought a ziploc bag and kept the dirty pad in my purse until I could get home (again, a more-easily-disgusted person might have had a problem with this, but I somehow managed). My circumstances changed slightly when I moved to Louisiana for graduate school. I started spending a lot more time away from home (twelve-hour days two or three times a week is not unusual for me), and I realized that the heat and humidity in Mississippi is, in fact, not the closest thing to hell on earth. Here’s where I’m going to get gross, so steel yourselves: things got swampy in more than just one way after moving to Louisiana. I started spending more time outside (sitting and talking to kill time between classes, going to get coffee, walking from class to class), and I grew increasingly disgusted by the feeling of a wad of cloth between my legs. When a classmate mentioned her menstrual cup, I did some more research online and realized two things: 1) a menstrual cup is not something I can make for myself at home, and 2) I should probably just suck it up and buy one anyway because they sounded pretty legit. After dragging my feet and debating between the Diva Cup, Moon Cup, and Keeper for much longer than was really necessary, I ordered the Diva Cup with Amazon Prime free two day shipping and waited anxiously by my front door because 1) everyone loves getting mail, and 2) it May in Louisiana and things were getting swampier by the second.

Ingredients (provided at lunapads.com)- “The DivaCup is made of a high quality, soft healthcare grade silicone that starts as a liquid. The molecules are then bound together (or vulcanized) with very high heat to form a solid stable piece of silicone (similar to the feel of soft rubber). The DivaCup is cured after production in an oven at a very high temperature to make sure all the molecules are bound and “chain linked” together. Since the end product is a solid material yet flexible and durable, there is no possibility for anything to leak into the body (no leaching). ”

Some great things about this product:

1. It’s Latex-free, BPA-free, and plastic-free

2. It’s free of dyes, colors and additives.

3. Unlike tampons, it doesn’t create unnecessary waste!

Product Description (provided at divacup.com) -”The DivaCup is a non-absorbent menstrual cup that simply collects menstrual flow. It is inserted in the vagina and sits at the lower base of the vaginal canal. It is worn internally, yet because it is soft and smooth, it cannot be felt nor will it leak when inserted properly. The DivaCup is the most clean and convenient method of feminine hygiene protection. No need to touch the flow. It is worn low in the vagina, not near the cervix, so it is easy to remove. No mess! The DivaCup ends hassles with unreliable disposables in endless absorbencies, shapes and styles. It is perfect for all activities – giving women true freedom without the worry, guessing and unreliability that disposable feminine hygiene products pose.

The DivaCup can be worn for up to 12 hours before emptying, washing and reinserting for use for another 12 hours. It can be used for light or moderate flows and is emptied more often to accommodate heavy flows. Perfect for overnight use.

The DivaCup’s expert, proprietary, patent-pending features make it comfortable and assures ease of use and reliability. Perfect for traveling, running, biking, hiking, dancing, camping, swimming, diving, scuba, yoga, extreme sports and more…”

Price – Around $30

Performance – I’m not sure if I could be happier with the Diva Cup’s performance. At first, like with tampons, it was hard for me to forget I was wearing it. But after trimming the stem of my cup a tad (it was a little too long), and figuring out how to put the cup in correctly every time, I honestly do forget I have it in. I’ll admit that, like with tampons, my cramps may be slightly worse on the first day, but the silicone that the cup is made from feels a lot like skin, and is consequently much more comfortable than a hard, dry wad of cotton. The only minor issue I encountered was the initial process of learning to insert the cup properly, but having used it successfully for three full cycles, I can now say with confidence I’ve gotten the hang of it. (And, to be honest, I used tampons for years and never felt like I was doing that right, so I guess by comparison the Diva Cup is much easier to use.) The trick with the Diva cup is getting the seal right, so being comfortable with the necessary repositioning and fooling around down there is key. Whereas with tampons I was just sticking them in and hoping for the best (maybe not the a great strategy, I’ll admit), inserting the Diva cup properly requires a basic understanding of your own anatomy. You fold the cup easier insertion, then make sure it unfolds properly to cup the cervix (rather than getting stuck, still folded, beside it, which was my biggest problem at first). The cup comes with instructions that are pretty helpful, but I had the best luck with using the cup on a day when I was mostly hanging around the house and had the freedom to spend a bit of time in the bathroom figuring the whole thing out. Now that that whole learning process was out of the way, I’ve had absolutely no problem with leaking whatsoever. To illustrate, I’d like to point out that I just spent a long weekend out of town involving sitting in the car for hours, using public restrooms, sleeping on friends’ couches and sofa beds, and getting all dressed up. I was never uncomfortable or concerned about bleeding on my clothes or smelling like a period. Dumping the cup in the toilet and rinsing it in the sink was heaps easier than figuring out what to do with a cloth pad or worrying that a tampon would clog the toilet or smell up the bathroom if left in the trash can. I was never one to sleep in tampons, but I slept in my Diva cup (quite comfortably, and in leggings without underwear because I forgot to pack enough, I might add) with no problem whatsoever.

Rating- 10/10. I haven’t been this excited since I discovered Netflix.

Would I purchase this item again? Actually, I just purchased a second one as a birthday gift for Dawn! (I’m not spoiling any surprises, she knows she’s getting one.) According to Divacup.com, I should replace my own Diva Cup around once every year, but various online sources report using the same cup for up to ten years. I’m not sure when mine will need replacing, but when it does, I certainly plan on buying another one.

My birthday is still several months away, and I should be saving my money rather than spending it. Unfortunately, none of what I just said makes me want the below items any less.

1) A pouch made to hold soiled, reusable menstrual pads: both useful and adorable. Am I the only one who hates using public restrooms when I’m on my period? This little guy could only help matters.

2) This body wash has a pretty impressive list of ingredients, and I can get behind almost anything that smells like geranium.

3) I love the way my Lotus Garden Soy Candle makes my bedroom smell and feel. Being surrounded by such a lovely scent all day long would be mega dreamy.

4) I’m almost out of my Indian Healing Clay, and Skin has yet to disappoint me with their ingredients and performance.

5) This should come as no surprise, but I’m a sucker for natural sleep aids. And look at that precious heart infuser spoon!

What about you guys? Have any wish lists you’d like to share?

I had a lot of fun online window-shopping for this post. As a result, Five Finds is going to become a regular occurrence on Turby and John. Expect a health and beauty themed Five Finds post at least once every other week! I’m also toying with the idea of devoting Friday’s posts to healthy food-related articles and/or healthy recipes. It would be appropriately named Foody Friday. We’ll see!

As promised on Friday, below are a couple of articles that might improve the quality of your life.

I’ve heard of phytonutrients (or phytochemicals) before, but this Care2 article about their many health benefits was pretty eye-opening. I had no idea that citrus fruit peels were even edible, and I certainly didn’t know that they could benefit my lungs and liver! I printed out the chart from this article and hung it on our refrigerator to remind us of the foods that we should be eating more often.

Finding reasonably-priced organic produce can seem impossible at times. Spinach, onions, and carrots are usually the only vegetables that we consistently buy organic (because we eat them so often that it only seems right). This article about Eating Organic on a Budget offers some pretty sound advice to those of us who don’t want to spend all of our paychecks on avocados and blueberries . Sadly, I couldn’t locate a CSA in or near Lake Charles. There is a pretty sweet farmers’ market that we frequent on Tuesdays, though, and we are already in the first stages of growing a big, wonderful garden.

Have a great Tuesday, guys!

A friend of mine recently came to me with a great idea for a post, so I did some research on on the topic and put something together that is hopefully both informative and helpful.

She began with mentioning how she stopped using baby oil after her showers upon discovering that it was unsafe on the Cosmetic Safety Database (with it being a petroleum byproduct and all). While browsing the CSD, she also discovered that the Summer’s Eve Feminine Wash for Sensitive Skin that her friend had been using had all kinds of awful ingredients that you would never want near your nether regions like synthetic dyes, fragrance, and ammonium laureth sulfate (a harsh surfactant). This made my friend wonder, and I’m quoting here, “What the hell can ladies use that won’t cancer up their lady parts?” I found this question to be a very valid (not to mention wonderfully-worded) one, and one that I’ve never heard addressed, so I took it upon myself to find the answer.

I began my quest on the CSD in the feminine care category, but I was soon disappointed when I learned that they had no feminine cleansers in their database with a hazard score lower than a three. No thanks!

One of the first moderately helpful sites that I found listed several easy solutions to vaginal odor and/or discomfort. This site suggested using inexpensive products that most people already have lying around like vinegar, aloe vera gel, hydrogen peroxide, and slippery elm bark (well, maybe most people don’t have this one lying around) to clean down there. I must admit, though, I’d be hesitant to put vinegar and especially hydrogen peroxide around my vagina (the former because it seems like it might cause irritation and the latter because it’s linked to cancer, which is what we’re trying to avoid here).

I checked out the green and natural section of drugstore.com, and I literally found only two natural feminine washes. The first is called DivaWash, and while it’s not specifically sold as a feminine wash (the bottle says that it can be used to wash the face or the body), it was located in the feminine cleansing category.

The positives: It’s free of parabens (preservatives that mimic estrogen), sulfates (harsh surfactants), and petrochemicals (chemical products derived from petroleum).

The negatives: The ingredients still aren’t awesome. The second ingredient listed is Cocamidopropyl Betaine, which is a synthetic surfactant that’s associated with skin irritation.

The second natural feminine wash that I found on drugstore.com is Natracare Organic Cotton Intimate Wipes.

The positives: They’re alcohol, paraben, sulfate, chlorine, and synthetic preservative-free. They’re also biodegradable.

The negatives: They come in the form of wipes, which seems a little unnecessarily wasteful…even if they are biodegradable. Also, very little is known about most of the ingredients (ie: datagaps). One of the ingredients that doesn’t have a huge data gap is Sodium Dehydroacetate, which is a preservative that’s linked to cancer. Bummer!

I also found an entire line of organic feminine care called Pink Kitti. The name makes me cringe a little, but what’s more unnerving is that I cannot find an ingredient list on the entire site. Major ingredients are listed but nothing else. Their site does state that their products are paraben and sulfate-free and that the ingredients are 89% organic. Still, I need a little more information about a product that’s intended to clean my vagina. If you have nothing to hide, then you should list your ingredients on your site. Am I right?

I always feel like I am let down when I try to get to the bottom of something, but maybe I’m just not looking in the right places. Do you guys know of any legitimately natural and safe feminine cleansers? I’ve consistently used whatever soap I’m currently using as a body wash to clean my lady parts, and I’ve never had any problems with it. But what about the people who feel like they need a little something extra down there? Shouldn’t there be a safe and effective product out there for them?

Remember that post I made about using tea tree oil as a deodorant? Well, it was great for the first few days, but a couple of problems eventually arose. The skin under my arms became very irritated, itchy, and almost raw (talk about a disgusting word!). I thought maybe it was happening because I should have been diluting it, but I added water and shook the bottle before each use but kept getting the same results. Needless to say, I had to switch back to homemade deodorant for now. I’m not complaining; It’s never failed me before.

I discovered that I had cervical dysplasia after my second or third trip to the Gynecologist. My follow-up pap smear was also abnormal. I have friends who have had to undergo biopsies after repeated abnormal pap smears, and I’ve heard a horror story or two about how painful it can be. Needless to say, I wanted to avoid that. My sister told me that she read a few things online about natural remedies for cervical dysplasia, and I did some research for myself shortly after that. A lot of the blogs and articles that I found suggested discontinuing the use of bleached tampons. I stopped using tampons altogether almost immediately, and I also began drinking the Female Toner Tea that I posted about a while back. Around this time, I also started taking folic acid after hearing and reading that birth control causes a folic acid deficiency in a disturbingly high number of women. Although I had no idea at the time that birth control was/is linked to cervical dysplasia and cancer, the knowledge that it was robbing my body of something that it needed persuaded me to stop taking that as well (Not to mention, birth control also made me feel like I was going absolutely crazy).

My most recent gynecological exam was a few weeks ago, and my pap smear results came back normal. I hardly think that’s a coincidence.

For those of you who didn’t read my recent post concerning Brazilian waxes, I am/was considering trying an at-home waxing kit. Fortunately, I found an old and mostly unused Intuition razor while packing up the toiletries in my bathroom cabinet. When I first bought it several months ago, I tried the intuition on my legs and wasn’t super impressed. It did about as good of a job as the disposable razors that I typically use for my legs. I guess I didn’t even bother trying it on any other areas. After rediscovering it and in an act of desperation, I tried shaving my bikini line with the Intuition. After experiencing no razor burn from the initial experiment, I used the Intuition on the entire surrounding area. I’m happy with the results, to say the least. There’s very little stubble or razor burn, and I didn’t just pay someone fifty dollars to look at my ladyparts and cause me physical pain. It’s also great for armpits! I’m smitten, y’all.
