Since I know you guys keep track of each and every topic I’ve posted about in the past (sarcasm), I’m sure you all remember my bug spray post from last May. If not, then that’s okay too. I did happen to mention Vidoma Naturals Out & About Insect Repelling Spray in the aforementioned post, though, and it didn’t go unnoticed by the kind folks who are responsible for making and selling it. After seeing my post, they sent me a complementary Out & About Spray as well as an all natural sunscreen (review to come). Nice, right?! Below is my review of the former.
Ingredients (provided on product’s label)- “Distilled water (Aqua), neem oil (Azadirachta indica) and Polysorbate 20, with cedarwood (Cadrus atlantica), peppermint (Mentha piperita), organic lavender (Lavendula augustifolia) organic lemon (Citrus limon), citronella (Cymbopogon nardus), and eucalyptus (Eucalyptus citriodora) essential oils.”
The preliminary report I created for this product in the Cosmetics Database gives it a low hazard score of 1. This only ingredient with a hazard score above 1 is Polysorbate-20, and its hazard score of 3 was likely earned because of contamination concerns. It isn’t ideal, but the ingredients could certainly be worse. I mean, have you checked out the ingredients in Off! lately? DEET and possible phthalates all over the place!
Some great things about this product:
1. It’s free of parabens, sulfates, phenoxyethanol, & DEET.
2. It contains organic ingredients.
Product Description(provided at vidomanaturals.com)- “Out & About” is a proprietary blend of carrier oils and essential oils formulated to promote worry free outdoor activity. “Out & About” will provide 2-4 hours of freedom from small spring-autumn annoyances that can interfere with your enjoyment of the great outdoors. The spray does not stain clothing.”
Price– $14.95 for an 8.4 oz spray bottle.
Performance– This is definitely the least greasy natural bug spray I’ve ever used, and I really appreciate that. I expected it to be a bit oily like Burt’s Bees insect repellent, but it dries quickly and leaves no residue. In terms of effectiveness, I feel like it works just as well as (if not outshines) the Burt’s Bees stuff. My friends and I used it recently on a particularly mosquito-y night, and not a single one of us got bitten after application. Take that, mosquitoes!
Scent– Citronella, citronella, citronella! Some people aren’t fans, but I find it to be quite pleasant.
Rating– I’m subtracting a single point for the presence of polysorbate-20 in the formula, but the effectiveness of this product and its consistent fast drying easily earn it a 9/10.
Would I purchase this item again? Yes, yes I would.
