rosehip + hibiscus face serum

Remember Christina’s review of Vitamin Enhanced Face Firming Serum? Well, today I’ll be reviewing the second of the two serums Made From Earth sent me for review. I didn’t use the serum Christina reviewed for long enough to form an opinion about it, but I can say firsthand that their Rosehip + Hibiscus Organic Face Serum is pretty great!

Ingredients (provided at madefromearth.com)- “Organic Aloe Vera Juice, Hibiscus Flower Extract, Rosehip Seed Oil, Kosher Vegetable Glycerin, Coconut, Emulsifying Wax, Vitamin E, Phenoxyethanol, Dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE Bitartrate), Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), Vitamin B3, Pro-Vitamin B5, Beta Carotene (Pro Vitamin A), Vitamin C Ester, Polysaccharide Gum, Rosemary, Neem, Tetrasodium EDTA, Citric Acid.”

This product wasn’t in the Cosmetics Database, so I linked to each ingredient above. The ingredients with hazard scores above a 3 are Emulsifying Wax (4) and Phenoxyethanol (3-4). There was no data on Vegetable Glycerin or Vitamin C Ester, and Rosehip seed oil, MSM, and Polysaccharide Gum wern’t in the database at all.

Some great things about this product:

1.  It’s free of parabens.

2.  It’s cruelty-free.

3. It contains organic ingredients.

Product Description(also provided at madefromearth.com)- “This gentle Rosehip + Hibiscus Face Serum is recommended for sensitive skin. The serum is easily absorbed by the skin. Rose hips are a rich source of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and Vitamin C. The serum’s ingredients play a primary role in the regeneration process of skin cells and repair of damaged tissues.

Hibiscus extract, with its antioxidant properties, blends perfectly with the Rosehip Oil and provides natural astringent properties.”

Price- $24.99 for a 2 oz. bottle.

Performance-  Most often, I’ve been wearing this serum underneath Made From Earth’s Aloe Vera Skin Treatment at night and applying to my neck and chest after showering each day. It’s light enough to moisturize my chest without breaking it out, which is great and surprisingly hard to come by.  The bottle suggests waiting 5 minutes after applying this serum before putting any other moisturizer, but I usually get impatient and only wait about two. Comparing the times when I wait the full five minutes with the times when I do not, I haven’t really noticed much of a difference in my skin. It seems soft, moisturized, and radiant whether or not I wait. Wearing this product by itself during the day also results in hydrated, healthy looking skin.

Scent- It has a light floral scent that fades pretty quickly after application.

Rating- 7/10. I’m subtracting 3 points for the questionable ingredients/ingredients with no data.

Would I purchase this item again? As far as lighter moisturizers go, my favorite might always be Karen’s Botanicals Rehydrating Aloe Vera Lotion. It’s less expensive per ounce and the ingredients are more ideal. However, I do thoroughly enjoy this serum, so I might alternate between the two in the future.

I’m afraid to try this because it has coconut oil, which is like a 4 out of 5 on the comedogenic scale. :/

That seems like a valid concern, Lei! This might help to ease your mind, though. While coconut oil is a 4 on the comedogenic scale, it is only a 1 on a 1-5 scale that measures skin irritation (with 5 being the worst)! Also, coconut oil is only one of the ingredients out of several that are present in this product. If you were slathering your face in only coconut oil daily, then sure…you might experience clogged pores. However, coconut oil makes up a small portion of this serum, and is likely nothing to worry about. Does that make sense? One of my very favorite moisturizers contains coconut oil (http://turbyandjohn.com/2011/03/16/karens-botanicals-perfect-lotion-review/), and I’ve never had a problem with it clogging my pores. Quite the contrary, actually!
